If they have your active private key it you can resolve the situation if you have a different owner private key. Then you can change your active private key and stake your eos again.

Your owner key is the one which gives you ultimate control, because it has the power to change keys. The active key cannot do that, but can be used to unstake and send. If someone uses your active key to unstake you can just use your owner key to change the active key and they cannot send, assuming you notice in time.

Why? You said the circumstance of another having your private key was hypothetical. Given your concerns I'd advise you to use a hardware wallet, or to generate a private owner key offline. Then you can change the owner key of your eos account and you'll have nothing to worry about.

do i need to do anything to keep my telos tokens or can i just let them sit in my genisis account indefinitely? (aside from maybe some EOS like rules about needing to use your accont after X years or whatever)
aside from voting, you don't have to do anything. Dpos requires participation though. There will be dilution of participation with more chains as we can't all be in two places at once, but telos will offer great dapps to use for everyone and they will get used by many. 👍
