I asked them about this in their AMA as I had the same thought. They won't be allowing you to cast a vote for exactly who you want. But rather you vote with your token power for who you think should be voted in. Then of all the people who chose to vote, they will use their 'voting pool' to vote for the top 30 vote getters. Here's the text of their response. The voting tool will be used to vote for the official list of block-producer candidates, with every user being able to define which candidate to vote. Yes I know but people using mew etc have to use gas to buy. If you currently can’t buy because eth is again stalled or prices for gas are to high it limits purchases. The fact that eos would exclude the need for gas is all the more reason the project is awesome but until mainnet we have to deal with eth making the process cumbersome

Actually, unregistered tokens will be moved into a separate contract and be available in time for people to claim them later, but Dan said there needs to be an additional function added to Ethereum before they can identify the rightful owners of unregistered tokens that will be left in an Ethereum contract.

I think price will go up but that is secondary; what is most important is for EOS to start functioning as a blockchain and achieving everything set out in the white paper. Abslutely great question! If it really is a huge step and cannot be undone (my guess is you might be able to redeem after the fact) then it should be very clear to everyone and if you buy on an exchange there should be a disclaimer upon purchase. My guess is 20-30% of people who buy on exchanges have NO IDEA you need to register your wallet if they take them off exchange.

It's not so simple as that. It's likely that a huge amount of EOS will be our of the market due to people not registering their EOS. I've seen numbers that only about 25% have registered their EOS. The unregistered EOS stiffens will be nice into a separate contract and await the release of an Ethereum Lite client to identify ownership with private key signatures.
