I think I read 98.5 percent of addresses with EOS accounted for. Hopefully you are not part of the 1.5 - I do think there is a tool to help folks even that miss deadline, but don't take my word for it. Google is your friend.

it's most likely handled like IOUs on hitbtc - i.e. at some point erc20 tokens will be swapped with eos native tokens, the one holding them at record date of the exchange swap keeps them

My understanding is most exchanges trade within themselves and not on the block chain... So your trading the "rights" to those coins... You own when transfer off exchange, so when they open withdrawal you will withdrawal to the eos mainnet

Yes. Because you can only buy on exchanges and that's a transport layer; that is, not an actual blockchain action, only a database they run to account for ownership. So if you buy EOS now on Bitfinex, for example, they will allow you to withdraw EOS coin AFTER an EOS mainnet is agreed upon by the community.
